UN Secretary-General Calls for Renewed US-Iran Negotiations as Conflict Reaches Six Months

UN urges US Iran talks — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to return to diplomatic negotiations, as their ongoing conflict marks its sixth month. Guterres’ appeal was delivered on Friday by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, who described the half-year milestone as a “sad marker” and stressed the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Speaking to reporters, Dujarric reiterated the United Nations’ position that only meaningful negotiations can bring an end to the hostilities between Washington and Tehran. He stated, “We again stress that the only solution to this is a diplomatic solution. And we urge both the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to engage in meaningful negotiations.”

The conflict began on February 28, 2026, following US and Israeli military strikes against Iran. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting both Israel and American interests across the Middle East. The fighting has since escalated, leading to widespread humanitarian and economic consequences throughout the region and beyond.

Guterres has warned that the war has caused severe disruptions to global food supplies, humanitarian aid, and fertilizer shipments. The near-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for oil and other commodities, has resulted in a sharp increase in energy prices. These developments have compounded the suffering of civilians and placed additional strain on international markets.

The United Nations has expressed strong support for ongoing mediation efforts led by regional actors, including Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. According to Dujarric, Guterres has maintained close contact with these countries in hopes of facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. The Secretary-General’s personal envoy for the conflict, Jean Arnault, remains available to assist both sides and regional mediators in their search for a lasting resolution.

As the war continues, the United Nations is calling on both parties to avoid further escalation and to prioritize diplomatic engagement. The organization continues to emphasize the importance of dialogue and negotiation as the only viable path to ending the conflict and alleviating the humanitarian crisis it has caused.
