Trump Iran peace plan — US President Donald Trump is expected to reject a new Iranian peace proposal and is privately planning to resume a bombing campaign after the US midterm elections in November, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The report, citing officials, states Trump is skeptical Iran will meet his demands.
The Iranian proposal, presented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi via Qatari intermediaries, outlines a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. The conditions include a seven-day cessation of all hostilities in the Middle East, the unfreezing of at least $12 billion in Iranian assets, the lifting of oil sanctions, and an end to the US naval blockade. Araghchi stated the decision now rests with Washington.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in an interview with Fox News and a defiant speech at the UN General Assembly, said the US must decide if it wants to end the war. He questioned why a previous ceasefire agreement was broken just two weeks after its signing and stated Iran is willing to negotiate within international legal frameworks, but “will not kneel” before the US.
The diplomatic standoff follows the collapse of an earlier agreement, which was interpreted differently by both sides, and a subsequent resumption of hostilities around the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
