Iran Condemns IAEA Decision to Report Nuclear Issue to UN Security Council

IAEA UN Security Council — Iran has denounced a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors to refer its nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council, calling the move “fundamentally irrelevant.” The resolution, passed on Wednesday, alleges Iranian non-compliance with nuclear safeguards.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, speaking on state television, stated that Iran has committed no violations. He argued that the cited non-compliance stems from attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities. Baghaei criticized the resolution for demanding Iran fulfill its IAEA obligations while ignoring that Tehran’s suspension of agency access was a response to those “aggressive actions.”

The spokesman expressed confidence that the referral would fail, predicting it would only further politicize the IAEA and damage the non-proliferation regime. The resolution, submitted by Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, reportedly passed with 23 votes in favor, three against, and eight abstentions.

It instructs IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to report Iran to the Security Council and UN General Assembly. Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA in late June 2025 under a parliamentary law, citing the agency’s failure to condemn the attacks on its nuclear sites.
