Portugal has registered its hottest September on record, with the national weather institute reporting an average temperature of 23.4 degrees Celsius. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said on Wednesday that the figure was 2.9 degrees above the 1991–2020 average, making it the warmest September since records began in 1931.

The agency noted the average maximum temperature reached 31.03 degrees, which was 4.21 degrees higher than normal and also a historic high. Portugal experienced two distinct heatwaves during the month, which was also the fifth driest September since 2000.

This follows an exceptionally hot year for the country, which saw its highest-ever May temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius earlier in 2026. Last week, the IPMA confirmed the summer of 2026 was the third warmest on record for Portugal.
