Germany ICJ Nicaragua Gaza genocide case — Germany asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday (7) to dismiss a case accusing it of facilitating genocide in Gaza by providing arms to Israel. Nicaragua filed the suit, alleging Berlin violated the 1948 Genocide Convention and international law.
Germany’s lead lawyer, Julia Monar, argued Nicaragua failed to follow proper procedures, notifying Berlin via a Yahoo email and giving less than a month to respond. “Nicaragua’s conduct indicates it was not interested in hearing Germany’s version,” Monar stated.
Monar told the court Germany has not, since 2024, authorized the export of war weapons to Israel for use in Gaza. Germany is Israel’s second-largest arms supplier. The ICJ rejected an emergency request by Nicaragua in 2024 to halt German aid but refused to dismiss the case entirely.
