Demis Hassabis Alphabet: Demis Hassabis, Nobel laureate and co-founder of Google DeepMind, has been appointed chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google, marking a major leadership change for the company. The move, announced on August 6, 2026, is part of a significant reshuffle at DeepMind and Alphabet. Hassabis will also serve as chair of DeepMind, the artificial intelligence research lab he co-founded in 2010.
Alphabet stated that Hassabis will focus on long-term strategy and accelerating scientific breakthroughs, including his ongoing work at Isomorphic Labs, an AI-powered drug discovery company that spun out from DeepMind in 2021. In a social media post, Hassabis said the new roles would allow him to dedicate more attention to scientific innovation, particularly in the area of disease research. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2024 for his contributions to the field.
The leadership changes come amid broader shifts at DeepMind. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously chief technology officer and chief AI architect, will become senior vice president, taking charge of the division’s operations and the development of Google’s advanced AI models and products, known as Gemini. Meanwhile, Jeff Dean, a veteran Google engineer with nearly thirty years at the company, is departing to pursue new opportunities, according to a statement from Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Hassabis’s co-founder at DeepMind, Mustafa Suleyman, now leads Microsoft’s AI division, highlighting the competitive landscape among major technology firms. Google is vying for dominance in artificial intelligence alongside Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Chinese companies such as DeepSeek and Moonshot. The industry is racing toward the development of advanced general intelligence, a milestone where AI systems could match or surpass human cognitive abilities.
This reshuffle underscores Alphabet’s commitment to maintaining a leading position in AI research and innovation at a time when global competition in the sector is intensifying.
