Burkina Faso’s Traoré Marks Four Years in Power, Defines Presidency as ‘Sacrifice’

Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, marked the approaching fourth anniversary of his 2022 rise to power with a wide-ranging press conference on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Traoré, who also chairs the Sahel States Confederation (AES), described the presidency as a profound “sacrifice” necessary for confronting what he termed imperialist forces.

Reflecting on the situation that prompted his takeover, Traoré stated there had been “many failings in the management of power” by his predecessors, particularly regarding security and the economy. He said seeing “the people suffer” and “hope disappearing” was what revolted him and his supporters. “Given the way things are going now, I think we were not wrong to undertake that mission,” he concluded.

The leader framed his role as one of total commitment. “If you confront the real problems, it means you will inevitably face the imperialists,” Traoré said, adding that a president must be “ready for the supreme sacrifice” and forget about vacations or “the good life.” He claimed this stance is gaining understanding, not just in Burkina Faso but across Africa. “I think people are beginning to understand, to take an interest in what we are doing,” he said, calling this a “motive for satisfaction.”
