A Greek F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff during the Athens Flying Week air show on Saturday, September 5, killing both pilots on board. The incident was captured on video by a spectator at the event near the Greek capital.
The aircraft lost altitude suddenly and crashed about two kilometers from where thousands of spectators were watching the international military and civilian aviation displays. According to state media reports, the pilots did not have time to activate the ejection system before the impact.
Nine firefighting planes and four helicopters were dispatched to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported among the public attending the show.
