Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Without External Power for Fifth Day, Says Yashina

RIA Novosti

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located in southeastern Ukraine and currently under Russian control, has been without external electricity supply for five consecutive days, according to a statement by Yashina. The facility, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, relies on external power to maintain critical safety systems when its reactors are not operating at full capacity.

Yashina did not specify the cause of the ongoing outage. The plant has faced repeated disruptions since the start of the conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Both sides have previously accused each other of targeting infrastructure around the site, raising international concerns about nuclear safety and the risk of a potential incident.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly warned that a sustained loss of external power increases the risk of a nuclear accident, as backup generators are only a temporary solution. The Zaporizhzhia plant has been at the center of geopolitical tensions, with its safety and operational status closely watched by European governments and international organizations.

As of August 24, 2026, there has been no independent confirmation of the current situation at the plant, and it remains unclear when external power might be restored. The ongoing outage highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in conflict zones and the potential consequences for regional security.
