South Korea Recalls Ambassador to Ukraine Over POW Transfer Dispute

NK News

South Korea has recalled its ambassador to Ukraine following a diplomatic dispute over the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war. Seoul’s Foreign Ministry announced the recall in a press release on Thursday evening, following warnings from its top diplomat about firm measures against Kyiv.

The row was sparked by Ukraine’s handling of North Korean prisoners captured during the ongoing conflict. Details of the proposed transfer remain unclear, but the move has been perceived as undermining efforts to isolate Pyongyang diplomatically and enforce international sanctions.

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun had previously warned of “firm measures” against Kyiv, signalling Seoul’s willingness to escalate the dispute. The recall of its envoy represents a significant diplomatic downgrade, reflecting South Korea’s disapproval of Ukraine’s actions concerning North Korea.
