Sahel Alliance media — Media professionals from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger gathered in Ouagadougou on October 7, 2026, for a forum on strengthening the information sovereignty of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The event, held alongside the African Universities of Communication, focused on countering foreign narratives and building a confederal media bloc.
Bassolma Bazié, president of the National Commission of the Sahel States Confederation and patron of the forum, argued that the battle for sovereignty is inseparable from the information war. He traced the alliance’s origins to political changes in the three countries, leading to its formation in September 2023 and its confederation in July 2024. Bazié stated the resistance aims at full political, economic, security, and cultural liberation, quoting slain journalist Norbert Zongo: “One does not free a man, a man frees himself.”
Bazié called media professionals to action, declaring, “In this battle, information is to the mind what the Kalashnikov is to the front.” He announced the priority launch of confederal press organs, including Tafouk TV, which began broadcasting on September 16, 2026. These outlets aim to promote local achievements, culture, and perspectives.
Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism, echoed the call for cooperation. He warned that warfare has shifted into newsrooms and digital platforms, necessitating “sovereign, responsible, and strategic information.” The forum’s work is expected to contribute to a confederal media support policy and a charter for AES journalists.
