North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, on Saturday morning, according to authorities in South Korea and Japan. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated the launch was detected around 6:30 a.m. from the Wonsan area.
The launch marks another in a series of recent weapons tests by Pyongyang. The JCS said it was analyzing the specifics of the launch, including the missile’s flight range and altitude.
Japanese officials also confirmed the launch, with the country’s coast guard issuing a warning to vessels in the area. The test comes amid heightened regional tensions and a diplomatic stalemate over North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
